Re. Haldens and Floyers.
Mary Halden, nee Floyer died24th. November 1773 in her 40th. Year at Brent Pelham.
Her father was;
Thomas Floyer. Died 23rd January 1745 aged 50.
Her mother was;
Mary Grove of London. Died 17 January1767 aged70.
Thomas's father was Francis, Sheriff of Herts 1688. Died 12 January1722 aged 73.
His mother was Elizabeth Chester of Cockenhatch, Barkway. He had a younger brother Thomas, who as a fellow of Kings College, Cambridge, and he was burried in the chapel there 28 september 1669.
Francis`s father was Thomas. Died 4 January 1659? A younger Brother was another fellow of Kings and burried in the chapel 20 January 1684? aged 58. A sister Elizabeth married, 10 July 1639, Adam Washington, of Beaches Manor, Brent Pelham. A later relation of Adam, George, is noted for turning traitor and becoming President of the United States.
His mother was Elizabeth Musters of London. Died 14 November 1657.
Thomas`s Father was Francis, Sheriff of Herts 1648. Died September28 1678. It was this Francis who built the the main front of Brent Pelham Hall as it exists today.
His mother was Martha Boothby of Essex. Died 25 December 1658.
Francis`s father was Mathew Flyer, merchant of London.
His mother was Elizabeth Crouch of Corneybury near Buntingford. No dates known for either except that she remarried 14 Febuary 1597/8. ( I think they changed the date of New Year).
Mathew`s father was Richard Flyer of Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, a descendant of the Floyers of Floyer Hayes in Devon.
His mother`s surname was Craddock. No other details given.
Richard married a second time and a son of the second marriage, Ralph, Who seems to have married a rich widow and settled at Hints in Staffordshire.
The Floyer arms are " Sable, a chevron between three arrows erect Argent. Crest, on a wreath,a bucks head erased, with an arrow in his mouth".
jost of the above has been filched from Clutterbuck. There is a lot more on junior Floyers but nothing very spectacular I regret.
Ted.

Thank you so much Ted for the information you gave on the 5 Haldens on 27th January.I had info on Deaths of Thomas and Mrs Elizabeth in 1787 and 1822 from National Newspapers-now having their age at Death takes me back to their known Birth-both in Staffordshire.It seems 3 or 4 Brothers including Thomas came from Staffs to Brent Pelham(probably the others following Thomas who married Mary Floyer)
.
I would now ask if there is any more information re the Floyers especially in the 18th Century re Deaths,Ages etc particularly anything on Thomas and Mary(presumably under Mrs Mary Halden)-perhaps "Clutterbucks" can help again.
So grateful for your help.Regards Howard Briggs.

Halden Family of Brent Pelham Hall etc 1 Year, 6 Months ago

Hello Ted,
I received your 2 messages which whilst not being made public were forwarded by the Administrator.Thank you so much for these.
I would be grateful if you could inform me who held Brent Pelham Hall between 1767(at that time you say it was Thomas and Mary who I know married in 1766) and right through to 1840(John died 1840 perhaps Manor was sold prior to his Death)
Also was this John the Son of Thomas and Mary?
Had Thomas Floyer died prior to the 1766 Marriage?
Regarding the Staffordshire Floyers there were some I've found from Hints near Lichfield.
The information you posted was of great value which we appreciate. Regards Howard Briggs.

A bit more info on Haldens and Floyers, jostly cribbed from Clutterbuck`s "History and antiqueties of Hertfordshire". It doesn`t tell us much about Haldens being written about 1815 when Haldens were current affairs, not history. He did record the memorial stones in the church however and many of these are now unreadable or were destroyed during Victorian alterations.
These included ones to;
Richard Halden, died 24 July 1793 aged 38.
John Halden, late of London, died 28 March 1809 aged 78.
William Halden,died 3 February 1813 aged 69.
Mrs Elizabeth Halden, wife of the late John Halden, died April 23 1822,aged 74.
Thomas Halden, died May 10 1787 aged 49.
I cannot deduce from this who actually owned the place or how they were related.
The Floyers were either very grand or given to flowery language. For instance the Haldens just died or at best "departed this life. Floyers, however tended to do things like Francis Floyer who "devoutly resigned his soul into the hands of his Creator". This regretable event occured on "the twelth day of January in the year of our Redemption 1722".
jost of the Floyer memorials ran for several volumes. Suffice it to say that one stated that they were a branch of the Floyers of Hints in Staffordshire who in turn were a younger branch of the family who soon after the conquest were settled at Floyers Hayes near Exeter, Devon and after many generations moved to Dorset.
Francis Floyer married Elizabeth Cheter of Cockenhatch (Barkway) Who also must have been quite grand as one of the Cockenhatch Chesters is buried in St Georges Chapel, Windsor Castle, which is about as exclusive as burial places get.

Hello again Ted,
Thank you for your last message re Haldens and Floyers.
I asked earlier who held the Hall between 1767 and 1840.
I have now obtained some Wills and the sequence is,
There were no children of the Thomas Halden/Mary Floyer Marriage.
After Thomas Death in 1787 his eldest Staffs born Brother John Halden took over. He died 1809 and his Wife Elizabeth(nee Podmore) died 1822.
Their Staffs born Son John Halden was the one you referred to as being there at the time of the Sale about 1839.He died 1840.
His eldest Son Thomas Podmore Halden was probably involved latterly. He is my Wife's Gt Gt Grandfather and we knew he moved to Staffs between 1837 and 1841 so that ties in nicely.
We are jost grateful for the help you have given over the last few months . Regards Howard Briggs.

My 2x Gt Grandmother was JANE Halden, baptised at Brent Pelham 8 June 1812, her parents were JOHN & DOROTHY Halden.
Dorothy appears as a marriage witness through the years of 1813 & 1814.
There is no other entry for this couple, Jane married at Broxbourne in 1836 (unfortunately just outside of 1837).
I know nothing else of this family except a Catherine Halden also married at Broxbourne in 1837.
I am hoping that someone out there may know of John, Dorothy & Jane.
